Urbana MD Headshot Photographer: 3 Tips for a Confident, Professional Photo

If you have ever looked at a headshot and thought, “That does not look like me,” you are not alone. A great headshot should feel polished, confident, and natural. Not stiff. Not overdone. Not awkward.

After photographing thousands of professionals, entrepreneurs, creatives, and business owners, I see the same patterns over and over. A few simple choices can completely change how your photo comes across.

Here are the three biggest tips I give every client before their session, plus the most common mistake that quietly ruins great headshots.

Tip #1: Wear something that fits beautifully, not something trendy

Your headshot is not the place to experiment with fast fashion or loud patterns.

The goal is to look timeless, confident, and like the best version of yourself on a really good day.

Choose clothing that:

• fits your body well

• feels comfortable when you sit and move

• reflects your industry and personality

• does not pull, wrinkle, or need constant adjusting

Solid colors, soft textures, and simple layers photograph best. When your clothes fit properly, your posture improves, your face relaxes, and your confidence shows.

Tip #2: Think “approachable confidence,” not “serious professional”

Most people try to look impressive in their headshot. They tighten their jaw, stiffen their shoulders, and forget how to breathe.

That usually backfires.

The most powerful headshots communicate:

“I am competent.”

“I am trustworthy.”

“I am easy to work with.”

That comes from relaxed posture, soft eyes, natural expressions, and good direction during the session.

You do not need to know how to pose. You just need a photographer who knows how to guide you.

Tip #3: Match your headshot to how it will actually be used

A LinkedIn headshot is different from a website branding photo. A dating profile is different from a speaker bio. A therapist does not need the same energy as a real estate agent.

Before your session, ask:

Where will this photo live?

Who is it for?

What do I want people to feel when they see it?

When your photo matches its purpose, it works harder for you.

The biggest headshot mistake

Trying to look like someone else.

People bring inspiration photos of models, influencers, or corporate stock images and try to copy them.

The result usually feels forced and uncomfortable.

Your best headshot comes from leaning into who you already are. Your energy. Your features. Your presence.

A great photographer does not turn you into someone else.

They help you look like you on your best day.
