Finally sharing part two of our European summer vacation! In case you want to see how we terrorized the beautiful country of Iceland during the first half of our trip, you can find that blog post here.
After our stopover in Iceland, we flew into London and then drove 4+ hours to the Southwest part of the countryside where my husband grew up, in Somerset. We arrived to my in laws home just in time for a proper English bath before heading to bed.
The next morning, we walked down to the harbor of Watchet to begin exploring Andrew’s hometown. Thank goodness we brought rain jackets. We only saw the sun a few times the whole week! The view of the harbor at low tide. Can you see a few puddles where a few hours before there was 30 feet of water? This area has the third largest tidal range in the world. Boys sure know how to make their mamas nervous! The King is displeased. But he usually forgets about it quickly. lol We bought buckets and nets for an afternoon of creature hunting in the rock pools. Quick stop at the Watchet community playground. My in laws pretty backyard garden.Back to the harbor after lunch and ready to see what we can catch! There are also thousands of Precambrian fossils scattered on the rock beach and embedded throughout the sides of the cliffs. We brought home dozens! I hear something…It’s the local steam train passing through! Can you see the little head peeking out? Making friends with the neighbors.A ten minute drive up the hill and we’re at the gorgeous Quantock Hills. Andrew’s canine siblings, Lizzy and Hattie, love their daily runs here chasing bunnies through the very prickly shrubs. It’s all fun and games…Until someone starts a fight. Lots of crying happened on these magnificent hills covered in luscious purple heather and yellow gorse. A tongue that goes on for days.He wanted to run through the fields like the dogs but didn’t believe us how “scratchy” it would be. Tripod family selfie.Luke was excited to see his favorite animals. “Mimis”We met some cute wild Exmoor ponies. We promise we won’t eat you like they do in Iceland! Pretty pub at Tars Steps overlooking the ancient clapper bridge. Visting with Andrew’s family friends on their farm near Dulverton, Exmoor. Heading out to check on the livestock. Um, hello there. The lucky guy who gets to call all these gals his.Nice racks. English Red Deer. Back to the harbor. The boys were obsessed. My in laws with their furry children. Tide’s coming in… He who plays near wave gets soaked. “Look, there’s Wales.”Luke is ready for his first ringo ride. My little daredevil! Landon said he would pass. Taking the steam train to Dunster.
Stopping to check out the creek on our walk to a real castle!Dunster Castle atop the hill ahead. Hiding in the castle stables. We met a Rasta pony on the farm belonging to Andrew’s Aunt. Early morning drive-by photo of Stonehenge on our way up to London to fly back home. It was a very full week of adventures and beautiful sights! The flights were all made easy by the ipads we brought and the personal TV’s at each seat on the plane. The only thing we’d do differently would be to get Global Entry membership so we wouldn’t have to wait in a 2+ hour line when we landed home at 10pm.
