Gaithersburg MD Family Photographer | Spring Session at Swain’s Lock

This family session took place on a beautiful 80-degree evening in late April at Swain’s Lock in Potomac, MD which is one of my favorite locations for outdoor portraits.

As a Gaithersburg MD family photographer, I’m always looking for locations that offer variety without distraction, and this spot delivers exactly that. Set along the Potomac River, Swain’s Lock provides natural, undisturbed backdrops that feel clean, open, and timeless.

Weekday evenings here are typically quiet, which makes a big difference when photographing young children. The slower pace allows us to move through a mix of lightly guided poses and candid moments without feeling rushed.

Why Swain’s Lock Works So Well for Family Photography

One of the biggest advantages of this location is the range of scenery within a small area.

We’re able to incorporate:

  • soft greenery and open fields
  • textured paths and natural movement
  • subtle water elements from the Potomac River

This creates a full gallery with variety, while still keeping the overall look cohesive.

What This Family Did Right

This Gaithersburg, MD family followed one of the most important guidelines I give clients when planning their session—keeping their wardrobe simple and intentional.

They chose 2–3 complementary colors and carried them throughout each outfit, which created a polished, coordinated look without feeling overly matched.

This approach photographs beautifully and keeps the focus where it belongs—on connection, not clothing.

What to Wear for Your Family Session

Wardrobe plays a huge role in how your final images come together.

I always recommend:

  • sticking to a soft, cohesive color palette
  • choosing pieces that are comfortable and easy to move in
  • avoiding bold patterns or anything distracting

If you need ideas, I provide a Pinterest board for inspiration and a detailed blog post outlining what works best (and what to avoid) before your session.

The goal is to remove guesswork so you feel confident and the images reflect that.
