One of the most common questions I get as a Frederick, MD newborn photographer is: what should we wear?
The good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler you keep it, the more timeless and beautiful your images will feel. The focus should always be on connection, not outfits. Check out my newborn gallery to see my full newborn portfolio. If you’d like to set up a session with me, I offer two options for studio newborn photo shoots, and I can help guide you on which will be the best fit for your family.
Here are my go-to guidelines to help you feel confident going into your newborn session:
1. Wear Light, Neutral Colors
Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs, on your baby and your connection as a family.
Think:
- creams
- soft whites
- light grays
- muted pastels
Avoid bold colors, busy patterns, or anything with logos. These can distract from the emotion in the image and won’t age as well over time.
2. Choose Soft, Comfortable Fabrics & Textures
Your newborn session should feel calm and natural, and your clothing plays a big role in that.
Look for:
- cotton
- linen
- soft knits
These fabrics photograph more gently and create a more organic, relaxed look. Anything stiff or structured tends to feel more posed and less connected. Incorporating textures into your wardrobe will add dimension and make your images more interesting.
3. Don’t Match Exactly
Coordinating is good. Matching exactly is not.
Instead of everyone wearing the same color, aim for tones that complement each other. This creates depth and keeps your images from feeling flat or overly styled.
A simple approach:
- start with mom’s outfit
- build everyone else around it
4. Moms: Go for Loose, Flowy Pieces
This is one of the biggest things I guide my clients on as a Frederick, MD newborn photographer.
After having a baby, the goal is to feel comfortable and confident, not squeezed into something fitted.
I always recommend:
- loose-fitting tops
- flowy dresses
A maternity dress from your second trimester is often perfect. It drapes beautifully, photographs well, and feels natural on your body during this stage.
5. Keep in Mind: The Studio Will Be Warm
Newborn sessions are kept intentionally warm to keep your baby comfortable and sleepy.
That means:
- you’ll likely feel warm
- lighter, breathable clothing is best
Avoid heavy fabrics or anything that will make you uncomfortable during the session.
6. Your Baby Doesn’t Need an Outfit
Most of the time, your baby will be swaddled.
This keeps the look:
- timeless
- clean
- focused on their tiny features
You truly don’t need to bring an outfit.
However, if you’d like to include one:
- choose something simple and neutral
- make sure it fits well (not loose or oversized)
- avoid anything stiff or overly styled
Some great options:
- a fitted knit onesie
- a simple wrap-style outfit
- soft one piece, either knit or cotton
7. Don’t Forget Your Hands
This is something most people don’t think about, but your hands will be in a lot of close-up images.
You’ll be:
- holding your baby
- touching their face
- wrapping them up
I always recommend moms have their nails done before the session. Nothing over the top, just clean, simple, and neutral.
Think:
- soft pinks
- nudes
- clean, natural nails
It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference in the final images.
